After reading parables from Chinese literature and the Bible, students with horticultural experience increasingly agreed that horticultural activities can promote spiritual health; students with no horticulture background did not report a change in perception. Traditional instruction methods such as textbooks may be inadequate for teaching problem-solving skills. Problem-based learning strategies, while effective for preparing students for real-world scenarios, can be time-consuming to prepare and deliver. An online environment called the Problem-solving Learning Portal was developed to encourage faculty at Iowa State University to use more problem-based activities in their courses. The environment features a resource database, an Internet interface, case studies, and instructor-provided questions.
