An international team of researchers compared two rust fungal genomes to identify the characteristics by which these pathogens can invade their plant hosts and to develop biocontrol methods. The first tree pathogen was sequenced by DOE JGI because poplar leaf rust outbreaks weaken poplar trees, a candidate bioenergy feedstock. M. larici-populina was compared here with the wheat stem rust fungus sequenced by the Broad Institute that causes major epidemics of both barley and wheat worldwide.

Researchers at the University of Missouri recently "tapped" into two proteins' communications with the nucleus and discovered a previously unknown level of cross talk. The discovery adds important new information about how plant proteins mediate resistance to bacteria that cause disease and may ultimately lead to novel strategies for boosting a plant's immune system.

A briefcase-sized kit may one day be used for quick, accurate field tests for microorganisms that could infect and kill plants. If the pathogen is found, experts can tell farmers how to prevent the devastation, according to a Texas AgriLife Research plant pathologist. A $1 million US Department of Agriculture grant is funding the effort to protect U.S. agriculture from bacterial, fungal and viral agents on the homeland security select list.
