New research published in BioMed Central's open-access journal BMC Microbiology demonstrates that a prototype water purification reactor containing a thin film of titanium dioxide is able to enhance the sun's natural disinfection properties This device could be used to manage aquaculture infections without the need for expensive antibiotics or poisonous chemicals.

AZTI-Tecnalia, the technological center specialized in marine and food research, is carrying out research into exploiting by-products derived from the processing of citrus fruits and from wheat in order to create new food products and feed for aquaculture. An assessment published in the December issue of BioScience concludes that marine aquaculture could play a large role in feeding humanity in the coming decades, although substantial changes will be needed to reduce its reliance on terrestrial agriculture and other external feed subsidies.
